S.C Boy bomber – this was a close call

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Not being a parent myself, I can’t imagine how hard it was for the parent’s of Ryan Schallenberger to decide to do the right thing and turn him in to police. But I for one am glad they did.

Not only had he planned out his school attack complete with schematic of the school he had ordered the components needed to make the bombs. Had the parents not been paying attention things could have been bad.

They saw the warning signs before this but I was unable to find out what these “obstacles” were that they spoke of that stopped them from getting this kid help long ago. But they did something and I applaud them for that!

Considering he went as far as to order supplies and create a tape to be played after his death. This kid was not just crying out for help but was ready to make many others cry as well.

Sad state of affairs.

Time to start neutering!

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

A while back I wrote about some fraud alerts that had recently found. One from the FBI was about email death threats were they try and exhort money from the victims and that they might have a bunch of info but were from outside the US. The FBI suggested to just ignore it.

Now I mentioned that scam could easily move over to phone calls and it just so happens it did but with a scary twist. Earlier this month, 3 men one of whom, Olvin Velasquez, is under arrest, decided to perpetrate this crime on a local Austin family.

According to police, Olvin Velasquez and two other men (I use this term loosely) over the course of five days, repeatedly phoned an Austin woman and threatened to kill her or someone in her family if she didn’t pay tens of thousands of dollars. Now the twist I mentioned, they did these calls from a pay phone right in Austin! Reportedly they were actually following her and lived close by. Thankfully she was smart enough to report this to the police who traced it back to Velasquez who is a Honduran national here in Texas.

Police also said when the victim asked them why they were doing this to her they replied “This is how we make our living”. It has also been reported that this victim was the 7th one so they have done this 6 times before and it hasn’t been reported by anyone due to fear.

Bear this in mind, if you get an email making threats just report it but don’t reply, odds are extremely good they aren’t even in the US (they would most likely call to scare you more than email would).

BUT if you get a phone call like this, take it very serious because as this story shows, they might be right in your neighborhood. Immediately report it to the FBI so they can get things setup to trace and they will tell you what you need to do from there. This is a must, some law enforcement, either Federal or local needs to be involved so get these people off our streets.

/rant on

Real quick I need to tell you a story that hopefully will outrage you enough to get involved in any way you can. The problem, we are not properly protecting children who cannot protect themselves.

What I am referring to is a case here in Texas (but this issue is every place) where a thing named Melody Whatley and its mate Michael Denson are accused of child endangerment. Melody has already plead guilty and has been sentenced to one year and Denson’s trail is next. Sickening!

First I’ll give you some background on this thing called Melody. It has been in trouble with child protective services previously because two of its children, one of whom died, tested positive for marijuana at their birth. The one who died did so when this thing rolled over and smothered it to death while it was sleeping next to the poor baby.

In 2005 it was in trouble for violating its probation from a felony drug possession charge so it had to serve 9 months in jail. Somehow still having possession of the 3 babies that are still alive this thing gets in trouble once again because they tested all three of the kids and they came back positive for methamphetamines (ages 1, 2 and 3).

Now if all this wasn’t bad enough this thing will likely get her kids back once again when she gets out in a year!! What in the hell do you need to do to loose custody of your kids? How many screw ups should one get? Why do we not do more for our children?

I am not a parent but I am still outraged that this could take place and have started contacting local legislators to express my disgust. ANYONE who would do drugs in front of their children no longer deserves the privilege of raising them. Drug use is no excuse! These kids didn’t ask to be brought into this world and anyone who would put drugs before their children (like doing drugs while pregnant) needs to loose their kids and be sterilized! This thing in this story and its mate should both be neutered so they can never harm any other children.

Sad part is this story happens all over the US over and over again and has for quite some time. It is our responsibility as adults to protect those that cannot protect themselves… our little ones.

Eyes in the back of your head

I wanted to let you know we have added an Amber Alert Ticker to our home page http://www.getselfprotection.com. In the event of a child abduction and Amber Alert you will see it change to show you all of the information regarding the alert. This is a great service and if you get a chance head over to http://codeamber.org/support.html and give them a donation to help keep this needed service going!

What got me thinking about this was I went out this weekend to do my pant shopping for the decade hahahha Yes I am a guy and shopping is like slow death for me so I only do it every 7-10 years :) When I was at the mall I saw a young mom who had 4.5 kids with her hahha Ok the .5 was her hubby who looked as happy as I was to be there and was pouting.

What caught my eye the most was her 2 youngest kids had on one of the Childgards. They are electronic child monitors and she had the panda on both of her little girls’ wrists.

I have been told that I need to update my style which for the women was probably obvious when I said it has been over 7 years since I shopped last. So I stopped in some store with a foofie name and clothes that were way to metro for me but I at least looked. About this time that same family with all the kids came in.

The wife started grabbing clothes and holding them up to her hubby who looked as embarrassed as I was to be seen there. Maybe 5 minutes had went by and the kids were already a bit rowdy before they even got into the store so it was getting worse. The woman was trying quickly to find something for her hubby to wear so neither of them was paying full attention to anything.

Honestly, not to sound bad but it reminded me why I have no kids ;) Just as I was about to make my retreat from the store I heard an alarm go off and both parents start yelling out “christie”! Maybe a second later you hear a “what” come from over by the exit.

The parents quickly gathered the kids up and scolded Christie for walking away from them. I was sitting there with the biggest smile on my face after seeing the childgard in actual action. We sell tons of those things and it is good so see people actually using them.

The first thing most parents of lost children say is “I only took my eyes off of him/her for a second”, well a second is all it takes for something bad to happen so having an extra pair of eyes can really help.

On a lighter note:

Since I don’t live near water I can safely say bring on the rain! We have got more rain here in Texas this year already than all of last year combined.

Downside to that of course is flooding and those people that no matter how many rescues you see on the news, still decide to drive their family CAR through a high water crossing.

They have had to rescue several people up in the Dallas Fort Worth area already today and I am sure there will be more. People give your rescuers a break and turn around!

For those that don’t you better get one of our 4 in 1 emergency tools so you can get out and be on the roof of your car waiting for the helicopter. ;)

Until next time, stay safe and keep your eyes open and your kids close!

It’s dog gone crazy

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

I moved to Texas over 10 years ago and when I first arrived here I lived in an apartment. One day I came home from work and as I opened my truck door to get out a dog running loose tried to attack me. Now I don’t believe in animal cruelty but to protect myself or someone else I will lay an animal out without hesitation or remorse.

This dog must have realized he picked the wrong human because I started heading right at him swinging and yelling and he kept backing away. Guess he sensed I know my place on the food chain and wasn’t the least bit afraid and in fact I was quite angry.

After running him off I turned to head back to my truck just as a young mother and her child pulled into their parking spot. When the mother got out and started to get her baby out of the car seat that same dog came back and started going after them. The poor woman was already deathly afraid of dogs and basically she froze. I saw this and ran over and kicked the dog with everything I had, it yelped loudly and took off running.

I stayed with the mother so she could get her baby out of the car and then I walked her to her apartment. A few days later the SAME DOG comes at me again until he realized it was me and took off running.

Now I’m not gonna lie, I was beyond angry at this point so I called the office and told them they had 10 minutes to get someone down here to deal with the dog or they would find it dead in the parking lot. I wasn’t kidding either! Luckily for the dog they came and found the owner to get control of the dog.

This happens all too often, this weekend at a labor day parade in Des Moines Iowa a dog bit 2 people at the parade after getting into a fight with another dog. WTH are people bringing dogs to a parade for anyway? And pitbulls to boot.

Also on labor day an 11 year old girl was walking home from a neighbors house when 4 dogs attacked her severely injuring her legs and she is listed as being in serious condition. They found the 4 dogs but have been unable to get anyone to fess up to being the dogs’ owner.

I could go on and on with terrible stories about current dog attacks on the innocent and it isn’t the dogs fault! I blame the owners of the dogs. Years ago I had a rescued pit bull who was the Houdini of the dog world and no matter what I did I couldn’t keep her in the yard. She was skiddish around kids especially, and with a bus stop a few doors down from me I had to make sure she never had the chance to attack a kid.

She didn’t like it but she got placed in her kennel inside the house until I got home. When I got home she could go outside in the yard but I stayed out there to be sure she didn’t get loose. Why? It was my dog and my responsibility! I couldn’t imagine being so ignorant as to risk the lives of little children just so save me some trouble or because the dog didn’t like being kenneled. Too bad for the dog!

We sell tons and tons of Electronic Dog chasers which emit a high frequency pitch that drives dogs nutz and makes them run away. We also sell tons of dog pepper spray and most of these people mention the fact that they can’t walk, run, jog or bike ride in their neighborhood without the threat of a loose dog attack.

Many are even dog owners themselves who have found that when they walk their dog on a leash, loose dogs try to attack their leashed pet. As a dog owner I fully support any laws that require leashes and hold the dog owner criminally responsible for their dog’s actions.

If you have a vicious dog story you want to share please send it to me at thejudge@getselfprotection.com.

For those who follow the law but find your neighbors don’t try the Electronic dog chaser found here: http://www.getselfprotection.com/dogchaser.htm

or our Muzzle dog pepper spray found here: http://www.getselfprotection.com/dogrepellent.htm

Don’t feel bad if you have to use either device on a loose vicious dog, you have the right to defend yourself and your pet!

Until next time, stay safe and keep your eyes open and dogs leashed!

The EMU nightmare

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

I caught the morning news and they were talking about the 3 fired administrators at EMU who were fired over the coverup of a young girls rape and murder. Im not gonna lie these people really chap my cheetah!

Before I go off let me refresh your memory about this. Laura Dickinson was raped and murdered in her dorm room at Eastern Michigan University Dec 2006. They found this poor girl after someone complained of the smell!

If that all isn’t bad enough EMU after being told by the coroner that foul play WAS suspected these scumbags post on their website for the students and tell her parents that NO FOUL PLAY WAS SUSPECTED!!!

Now for those of you wondering if this was just a mistake the answer is hell NO! They were more worried about losing money and didnt give a thought to the students’ safety.

To show just how blatant all of this was there were reports about this incident that were supposedly shredded by the student affairs VP Jim Vick, these guys think they are part of the Bush Administration of something.

Now the poor parents of this 22 yr old girl didn’t find out until February of this year that she had been raped and murdered and that the po po had arrested fellow EMU student Orange Taylor for the crime.

Imagine paying big money to send your child to college to have them killed and if that wasn’t bad enough to then be LIED to by that same college! I can’t even imagine the pain and anger they must feel.

The shame of it all is that colleges are straying from being a place of higher education above all and are turning into to nothing but a big business that is concerned more with making money than any thing else!

To prove my point it has even been reported that the EMU Alumni Foundation actually had the huevos to send out a letter pleading with the alumni not to look at the negatives of this situation and continue to donate money! Now how scummy is that!

Thankfully, the Clery Act requires all schools participating in federal student aid programs to report all crime in a “timely manner” or be subject to fines up to 27 grand, which is a start.

But personally, I would like to see the fine be set sooooo high that no college would ever consider covering up any crime…Period!

I also think they should give Mr. Dickinson a steel baton and put him in a room alone with Jim Vick and let him show how much he appreciates the lies told to him about his daughter’s death! Thwap!!!

Until next time stay safe and keep your eyes open!

Back to school time again

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

With the start of the new college semester comes a return to crime against college students. Here are some things you want to keep in mind when sending your child to or back to college.

Crime can happen at any time, this includes daylight hours. A false sense of security can lead to heart break fast.

Last week at around dinner time (daylight), an Elgin community college student was attacked in the school parking lot while walking to her car.

The scumbag walked up and never said a word. He just started punching her in the face and then he tried to drag her off by her hair to his car.

At this point she is in big trouble because if he gets her to his car, odds are good she will never be found alive again. This animal was obviously very violent and I can only imagine what he had in mind for her.

Before he can get her all the way to his car someone saw what was going on and started yelling so he let her go and took off.

Im glad to say this scumbag didn’t get to finish playing out his sick little plan on this young girl but he did get away.

This happens far too often, women need to take a different stance with strange guys. They need to view them as potential attackers first, especially when alone.

But if you just travel using the buddy system even during the day you can lower your chances of attack.

Also this girl saw the scumbag BEFORE he approached her. Being alone in a parking lot she should have turned around immediately when she saw this lowlife lurking around.

After she turned around she should have picked up the pace and if he was following her she could then scream and run. Also ALWAYS have your keys in your hand when in a parking lot alone if you choose not to use the buddy system!

The key to avoiding an attack is to never let them get close enough to put their hands on you. Trust your gut feelings, if something feels wrong, like a guy hanging out in a parking lot, then it probably is wrong.

This goes for during daylight hours!

You can’t always see trouble coming but when approached alone in a parking lot go into defensive mode. Keep him at least 6-8 feet away from you. Tell him to stay back.

He has no reason to come right up in your face unless he is up to something but don’t wait until he attacks to react. If he continues to come at you after you said to stay back then…strike!

Start screaming, you should have your keys in your hand so put them between your fingers and make a fist with the keys sticking out and go for the eyes!

If you were smart enough to get a pepper spray and/or stun gun ..USE THEM! As far as I am concerned you should empty the whole can of pepper spray in his face or run the battery out on your stun gun nailing this scumbag so he never forgets the mistake he made in attacking you!

Let him know you aren’t going down without a fight! Sexual predators look for weak, easy targets. They don’t want a fight, they want to dominate and hurt not be hurt. They are the purest form of coward out there like all men who hit women.

It is a shame that women have to worry about even the simple act of walking to their car in a parking lot but you do. Stay aware of your surroundings! The more aware and prepared you are the less appealing a target you will become.

Stay safe and keep your eyes open!

Child obesity – what is really the problem?

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

I was watching a show on TV that was discussing a 12 year old girl who went in for liposuction at the weight of 219! They gave her the lipo and got her down to 155 and within a few months she was back up to where she was before.

What do the parents do? Send her to Mexico to get the LAP-BAND surgery which is illegal for children that young in this country. This is becoming an all too familiar story these days since the number of children considered obese in our country has increased dramatically over the last 5 years.

But the problem is this. Using plastic surgery as a crutch is a bad mindset to give our children in this country. Saying gain as much as you want and then just get it lipo’d off is insane. There are far greater problems with being obese than just the weight gain (diabetes, heart disease and more).

This 12 year old is a perfect example of why this is a bad thing. Even after getting the lipo and removing over 45lbs of fat she goes right back to her old eating habits and gains all of the weight back. One of the doctor’s said “the lap band is a good alternative because it teaches the kids how much to eat”. I almost fell out of my chair with that statement.

Here is a novel idea, maybe the parents should teach the kids how to eat properly instead of getting surgery to do the work for them. I could not believe that doctor said that but he isn’t the only one that believes this B.S. It is your job as a parent to properly prepare your children for adulthood and if you also have a weight problem than you should consider a nutritionist to teach you so you can teach your kids.

All of my family has struggled with their weight and EVERY ONE of them can tell you why they can’t lose the weight. There is something they are doing that they aren’t willing to stop and that is why they can’t keep the weight off. Having all of the same genes and upbringing I weigh exactly what I did at the age of 18. I have a 30 waist and 32 length on my pants and I weigh between 150-165 (it varies) which is the perfect weight for my height of 5’10″.

Now why can I control my weight when the rest of my family struggles? I decided long ago that I would not follow in the footsteps of my father. He was the same height that I am but he weighed 225lbs, which was about 60lbs overweight. At the age of 42 he had is first few rounds of heart attacks and by the age of 52 he was dead from heart failure. Coincidence?..No.

At the age of 14, I started body building and playing sports. I was so active I had more trouble keeping weight on than keeping it off. This is exactly the same problem all of our kids should be having.

With this 12 year old her doctor said she tried to do sports (run track) in school but the school was afraid she would have a heart attack because she would be drenched in sweat and beat red in the face after just a few minutes.

So that was the reason why she couldn’t use physical activity to help keep weight off. Bad excuse. When you are 219lbs at 12 years old you need to start slow. Walking would be the place to start in this instance BUT the real problem was that they waited until she got too heavy.

If you have a young child that is overweight and your pediatrician tells you that you need to do something with the child’s weight, later is not the time to start! It is our duty as parents to teach our children how to be healthy, happy adults.

Our children learn their eating habits from their parents and if you are obese than the odds are your kids will also be obese. If you are obese than you owe it to your children to improve your eating habits which will improve theirs as well.

Now we have some issues in this country in regards to weight loss. Many women take it too far and wind up with an eating disorder and then you have the opposite end of the spectrum where men and women will say “I am comfortable with myself and don’t care what I look like”.

Now, not caring what other people think about your appearance as long as you are happy, is exactly the mindset you want to achieve. Sounds like I contradicted myself right? Wrong.

Wanting to lose weight should not be for superficial reasons but for the best reasons of all, to live a healthy and happy life. When you become obese a whole myriad of issues arise such as diabetes, heart disease, fat build up around the heart and much more. Most obese people have trouble getting up out of a chair or walking stairs or many other normal activities.

Your goals should be simple; get healthy and teach your kids how to be healthy. I promise you if you change your eating and activity habits, barring a thyroid issue, you can lose weight. Just don’t do it for appearances, that is too easy to dismiss. Instead look up all of the diseases and other issues that come from obesity and if that isn’t enough to kick you in the arse than I am not sure of what would.

I don’t care about my weight, that is/has not ever been a concern for me but the issues that befell my father due to his weight problems was an extreme concern. I intend to live for many years past the age my father lasted.

Here are some tips:

  • Soda, diet or not……gone!!
  • Eat small meals 4-5 times a day and drink water before and during your meals (my goal at a restaurant is to eat until I am no longer hungry and to leave with a doggie bag of food which becomes another small meal or two)
  • Eat LOTS of dietary fiber foods (beans, oatmeal etc..)
  • You must eat breakfast! I recommend oatmeal topped with a grape nuts type cereal for the grains and then topped with blueberries and honey.
  • Eat slower! Your brain needs time to register that you are no longer hungry and if you woof your food down it doesn’t get that time (you’ll be surprised how much less you will need to eat to no longer be hungry)
  • To reiterate – do NOT eat until you are stuffed! Eat slow and stop when you are no longer hungry. Glasses of water really help you get to this point quickly.
  • Women STOP USING FOOD FOR COMFORT!!!!!!! Food is not your friend!
  • Instead of using food for comfort use exercise. When you feel sad or upset and get the urge to shovel junk food down your throat, throw on your workouts clothes and walk, run, jog or whatever exercise you enjoy. Get that “high” from the endorphins released during a workout instead of food.
  • Do NOT diet. Instead decide to improve your health and the weight will fall off on its own as a result. Our bodies are supposed to be fat burning machines not just fat storage.
  • If you can’t do this for yourself then do it for your family!
  • You don’t have to cut out all bad foods! You just need to make them occasional TREATS that you use reward yourself for something (not for comfort). I love pizza and when I treat myself to pizza I allow myself a small portion. Remember the key word here is occasional treats not daily
  • I really hope that someone reads this and takes it to heart and improves the lives of themselves and their children. This is a serious problem and has NOTHING to do with appearance, this is a huge heath and quality of life issue; forget appearances completely.

90% of the people I know that have dieted for appearances sake have failed. All of those that have done it for their quality of life and health or even better their family, has succeeded! You do the math.

Parents take control of your lives and then help your children do the same but you have to start right away! Don’t wait until your child is in the same situation as this young 12yr old girl to act, the younger you start the easier the changes will be.

Good luck to you and stay safe out there!

2 Oklahoma girls ages 10 & 12 accused of kidnapping

    Monday, July 16th, 2007

This is one of the craziest incidents I have ever heard of and leads me once again to ask what is wrong with our kids today?

These two girls lived a few blocks away from the house that they allegedly broke into in the early hours of the night on July 5th while Sheila Wells slept and her husband was at work.

They took her son and a stroller, clothes and diapers and disappeared. About 6 a.m. a knock on the door woke up Sheila Wells and she answered the door only to find the 12 year old girl there at the door.

She told her that they had her son at the house so they both left to go and get Brandon back. Upon returning home she called the police and found the note the girls had left on her couch when they took her son.

It said not to call the cops and to leave 200,000 on the couch and her son would be returned unharmed. It seems that after the girls took the boy, they returned to their home where their mother recognized the child and made the 12 year old go and get Brandon’s mother Sheila.

Which is why she came knocking at 6 a.m. Thankfully the girls mother had the sense to not cover for her kids and put an end to what would have been a real nightmare for Sheila Wells when she awoke to find her son kidnapped.

In the end the story has a semi happy ending, the child was unharmed and will be fine. The part that makes this less than a happy ending is the idea that children would perpetrate such a crime.

Stay safe a keep your doors locked!

5 Teenagers die in car crash in New York

    Sunday, July 15th, 2007

This is a very sad sad story. Tonight in New York, 5 teenage girls died when their SUV veered into the path of an oncoming tractor trailer, killing all of them instantly.

It is believed that the driver may have been “texting” on her phone at the time of the accident. Police ruled out drugs and alcohol but say inexperience, speed and distraction may have caused this crash.

The girls were finishing a passing maneuver when for some unknown reason they veered into the path of the tractor trailer. Like I said at the start this is a sad story.

We all remember what we were like at 16-17 even 18. With a bunch of friends in the car common sense goes right ut the door along with attention to the road. Today it is ten times worse with all of the gizmos the kids have to draw their attention away.

It may be time to rethink things. Parents may need to become less flexible to their kids. Maybe even go as far as to invest in the monitoring systems they are coming out with that allow you to see your child as they drive, along with speed and other factors. This way you can see what kind of driver your child really is.

Listen this isn’t anything new, when I was young I had a bunch of friends die in a rollover accident back in my home state. They were speeding, drinking and screwing around when they wrecked. This story has played out all over America and to be honest I am lucky to not have been a story myself.

I am not sure of the answer to this problem but we all have seen how bad teens drive on the road, even when they aren’t getting into accidents. We need to come up with even more restrictions on the children and it will be tougher on parents but I guarantee it will be less rough than what the poor parents of those girls are going to have to go through.

Now before I go off on my tangent I want to state that by no means I am saying this tragedy was caused by cellphones since there is no way to tell WHO was texting on the drivers phone at the time of the accident, it may have been a p

Cell phone usage should be banned while driving for all people. Many may disagree but I can point out who is on the phone by how they drive. People on phones drift in their lanes, ride the brakes and can’t keep a constant speed, they make last minute turns with no turn signal because it would require them to put the phone down, they tailgate with open lanes, they rear end cars at red lights not paying attention it goes on and on.

Watch for these behaviors, not all will be on the phone some are just horrific, ignorant drivers but most of the time you can tell the gabbers. Do everyone a favor and make a choice: drive or use the flippin phone not both!

When I get a call I want to answer I pull over, if I can’t then it rolls to voice mail and I return it when I can. I haven’t had an accident or ticket in over 15 years…coincidence? I doubt it.

    Stay safe out there!

    Self Defense Tips

    Friday, April 6th, 2007

In this day and age you never know who you are dealing with you should try and avoid confrontations if possible. If you get caught up in a situation, try to talk your way out of it. But if you can’t….

  • Try not to show fear – this may sound funny but it can actually provoke a physical confrontation.
  • Always try and keep some distance between you and the aggressor to avoid sucker punches
  • Obviously if the aggressor is intent on hurting you and you have it now would be a good time for some pepper spray in the face and head to safety.
  • If no mace or pepper spray then you might have to resort to physical strikes and the main thing to remember is to remain calm and to breathe, this will help you focus on defense and counter attacks.
  • Your primary striking targets should be the eyes, nose, mouth, ears, throat, groin, knees or shins and I would choose whichever is easiest to get to.
  • For the nose a palm strike is effective
  • For the eyes a punch or gouge will work well
  • For the ears take both hands (fist or palm) and smash both sides of his head at the same time on his ears, it will start his ears a ringing
  • Obviously for the knees, groin or shins a kick will work
  • For the throat either extend and stiffen your fingers and jam them into his Adams apple or a chop or a punch will work. Just aim for the Adams apple.
  • If you have keys place them between your fingers and slash at his face – aim for the eyes or cheeks. A kubotan is very effective small self defense weapon you can get for your keychain which work better than keys themselves, same with “the heartattack”.
  • If you get grabbed from behind, don’t try and move forward this will only tire you out instead throw your weight backward, try and smash him in the face with the back of your head. You should also smash down on his foot – aim for the top of his foot just down from where it bends at the ankle
  • These are just some basic techniques you can use in a pinch to try and defend yourself. You should also try and find a self defense class in your area, many are free and can help save your life as it can help you to remain calm and confident in a crisis. Be safe!
