A Few of the Ways You can Protect Yourself from Dogs

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

Learning the best way to guard yourself from an aggressive dog could save your life one day since more people are killed by vicious dogs each year and the numbers don’t seem to be reducing. Depending on where you live there may be laws holding the owner criminally answerable for a dog attack but that does zero for you or your loved ones if you are maimed or killed during an attack.

Thankfully we have various diverse ways for you to protect yourself from dogs and you simply need to make a decision which one is the best choice for you.

o Dog Pepper Spray – It was expressly designed to work on all canine animal breeds. Even though the effects are not unending it will cause horrible pain to the dog as their sense of smell is more keen than ours so the effects on the nose of the dog will be even worse than it is on a human nose. To counteract the effects the dog will need to have the sprayed areas rinsed with water or the effects will fade in about 30 minutes if left untreated. Although not designed for use on humans it is quite effective and can be used to help defend you from a human assailant as well.

o Bear Spray – If you are someone who likes to camp or hike in outdoor areas that may contain bears or other animals you may want to get a bear repellent pepper spray. This product is intended to work on a Grizzly Bear and it is also extremely effective on dogs and humans. This once again gives you protection from many types of possible attackers and all in one handy device.

With just a little effort on your part you can easily protect yourself from attacking dogs and if you pick the right weapon it can also protect yourself from human attackers.

The Best Protection from Dogs

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011

Learning how to defend yourself from an aggressive dog may well save your life one day seeing as more people are killed or maimed by vicious dogs every year and the figures don’t seem to be dropping. Depending on where you live there may be laws holding the owner criminally answerable for a dog attack but that does zero for you or your loved ones if you are maimed or killed during an attack.

With all of that said, thankfully we have many options of self-protective weapons from which to select in an attempt to stay safe.

o Mace Dog Pepper Spray – This is basically . It was specifically intended to work on all canine animal breeds. Though the effects are not permanent it will cause horrible pain to the dog as their sense of smell is more acute than ours so the effects on the nose of the dog will be even worse than it is on a human nose. To counter the effects the dog will need to have the sprayed areas flushed with water or the effects will fade in about 30 minutes if left untreated. Even though not designed for use on humans it is quite effective and can be used to help protect you from a human attacker as well.

o Ultrasonic Repeller – This will be the most humane, yet effective device on this list. It uses a extremely loud 130db ultrasonic sound as well as intense flashing lights to scare off a dog from up to forty feet away. Being ultrasonic, humans cannot hear the high pitched sound but dogs sure can! There is no permanent damage done to the dog but it will want to get as far away as possible. Because the sound leaves the device out of the front in a cone shaped pattern your dog will hear it but not be as effected as the aggressive dog will be getting the full cone of sound.

o Retractable Steel Baton – This item can serve a dual purpose as it will work to help protect you from both dogs and humans alike. The retractable steel baton is very effective and easy to carry on you as it comes with a holster so you can position it on your side. With a simple flip of the wrist you now have increased your reach by 16, 21 or even 26 inches depending on which length baton you make your mind up to carry.

While you may not want to injure an animal or person for that matter, if it comes down to letting them to maim or kill you or you hurting them then the choice is easy.

Man shot in face during a home invasion robbery

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

You know I have seen the crocodile Dundee movies and other shows talking about how tough Australians are but I never really believed it might be true until now.

A couple of days ago a 33 year old Australian man was in his home in Busselton, Australia sleeping in bed with his wife when a man burst into the room and shot the homeowner in the face with a shotgun!

Now this is further proof about the toughness statement. This guys wife jumps out of bed and tries to tackle the shooter that just pumped one into her husband. The intruder still managed to get off 2 more shots that hit the homeowner in his chest and in the face for the second time!

Now this guy has been hit in the face TWICE and body including his leg once with shotgun blasts. Even with all of that when police arrive this guy is up and talking!

He was taking to the hospital where the doctor called his a sissy for coming to him with these scratches and gave him a pint of lager and sent him on the way! Okay not really but they did his injuries were not life threatening. Goes to show if you want to kill an Aussie you better bring a bigger gun! LOL

Best Stun Guns for Women

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

There are many great options available these days to the woman who wants to protect herself from attack and we are going to cover the Best Stun Guns for Women. Although most self-defense items are unisex, there are some which are better suited for women because of the type of item.

Here is a list of some of the Stun Guns that are perfect for Women:

Lipstick Stun GunJust like it sounds this item looks exactly like a lipstick making it perfect for the purse or pocket. Although it is only about 3 inches tall it packs a massive 950,000 Volts of scumbag deterring pain waiting to be unleashed with a simple press of a button!

Pen Stun Gun This is another item easily carried and used when needed. It is only 6 ½ inches long and only one inch wide making easily held even with small hands. It can deliver an over-whelming 1.2 million volts of electricity to your attacker.

Pretender Cell Phone Stun Gun - This looks just like a cell phone but you wouldn’t want to try to make a call on it. It doesn’t function as a phone and you just may zap yourself in the head with the unbelievable 4.5 million volts of agony that this baby can deliver. It is only 3.8 inches tall and comes with a holster if you prefer to wear in on your side or clip it to a purse strap rather than keep it inside of the purse or a pocket.

Multi-Function Stun Gun - The reason I added this item is its’ multi-function capabilities of being able to deliver 2.7 million volts of pain, provide you with an extremely loud personal alarm and emergency flashing light as well as a flashlight for times you need to see in the dark. Best of all is that this little wonder is only 4 ¾ inches tall making is very easy to carry and use.

You will probably notice that all of these items on this list are very small and easy to carry because unlike clothing for men, the clothing designed for women generally comes with very little pockets.

This makes all of these items perfect for carrying when you have little space to spare but still want to be sure you have some extra help should you need it.

Reasons to carry a Stun Gun in case of attack

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

There are many good reasons to carry a Stun Gun in case of an attack and very few not to keep one on you. Most victims never see their attacker coming which is exactly the way the criminals want it to be. This means you have very little time to react and any advantage you can give yourself the better your chances are of surviving the incident which is one main reason to carry a Stun Gun.

Unlike pepper spray which is meant for distances of usually 3 to 20 feet, a Stun Gun is used for an up close attack which means that the attacker needs to be within reaching distance in order to use it on them. The downside to all of this is that you will also be within reaching distance of your attacker.

Because the Stun Gun is meant for up close action it is very useful should you be attacked without seeing them coming and once the attacker has grabbed a hold of your body you can then send however many thousands of volts through his body.

One of the best features of a Stun Gun is that the voltage does not pass through your attacker and back into you unlike what is shown on television. No matter how long you hold it on them delivering voltage you can touch them without getting shocked. This is another great reason to carry one.

The last reason to carry a Stun Gun in case of attack is how good it is as a deterrent because criminals want the easiest victims they can find. If you see a threat coming and display your weapon to show you are not afraid and that you are ready to use it then you can deter most criminals who will just go look for someone who isn’t as prepared to defend themselves.

Criminals are cowards and with very little money or effort on your part you can make yourself a bad choice of victim and help to lower your odds of falling victim to attack.

How to Protect Yourself From an Aggressive Dog

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

Learning how to protect yourself from an aggressive dog could save your life one day since more people than necessary are killed by vicious dogs every year and the numbers don’t seem to be dropping. Depending on where you live there may be laws holding the owner criminally responsible for a dog attack but that does nothing for you or your family if you are maimed or killed during an attack.

Thankfully we have many different options for protecting ourselves and you just need to decide which one is the best fit for you.

Super Dog Chaser – This item utilizes a 130 decibel ultrasonic high frequency sound and bright flashing LED lights to deter aggressive dogs from a distance of up to 40 feet. It is the most humane device on this list as the effects are immediately removed when you stop pressing the button. Even though there are no long-term side effects, it is highly effective. You generally won’t need to use this device more than once on the same dog. After the first time just the threat should be more than enough to send it heading the other way.

Mace Muzzle Canine Repellent – This is basically dog pepper spray. It was specifically designed to work on canine animal breeds. Although the effects are not permanent it will cause great pain to the dog as their sense of smell is more keen than ours so the effects on the nose of the dog will be even worse that it is on a human nose. To counteract the effects the dog will need to have the affected areas flushed with water or the effects will fade in about 30 minutes if left untreated. Although not designed for use on humans it is quite effective and can be used to help protect you from a human attacker as well.

Retractable Steel Baton – This item can serve a dual purpose as it will work to help protect you from both dogs and humans alike. The retractable steel baton is very effective and easy to carry on you as it comes with a holster so you can put it on your side. With a simple flip of the wrist you now have extended your reach by 16, 21 or even 26 inches depending on which length baton you decide to carry.

Telescopic Stun Baton – This is yet another item that can be used on both dogs and humans quite effectively which can save you from having to buy two separate items. Just the loud sound of the baton extended with just the press of a button and then firing off electricity onto the air can be enough to protect you from an aggressive dog. Should the dog need more convincing just a quick touch with the Stun Baton will send quite a bit of electricity through your aggressor.

Bear Repellent – If you are someone who likes to camp or hike in areas that may contain bears or other wildlife you may want to purchase a bear repellent pepper spray. This product is designed to work on a Grizzly and it is also quite effective on dogs and humans. This once again gives you protection from multiple types of possible attackers all in one handy device.

As you can see you have many options you can use to protect yourself so finding what fits your busy life should be much easier. No sane person wants to hurt an animal but when it comes down to them or you the choice is easy.

Pepper Spray – How to Clean the Eyes When Hit With Pepper Spray

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

No matter how hard you try to avoid it there may come a time where you need to know how to clean the eyes when hit with pepper spray due to a mistake or mishandling on your part. If done correctly you can counteract a good portion of the effects but great care must be taken as you can easily make it worse as well.

The pepper spray liquid that comes out is mostly water based with the exception of the pepper gel and pepper foam. The pepper granules are added to the delivery medium and vary in size by whether you are using foam, gel, spray or a fog style pepper spray.

The size of the pepper grains matter because the finer the grain the more easily they will be absorbed into the pores of the skin.

There are two main things you can use to counteract the effects and they are water or milk. Either one will effectively help to flush the grains out of your eyes as well as off the skin.

One main thing you need to keep in mind is that under no circumstances should you dab, blot, wipe or rub in an effort to remove the pepper spray as this will only serve to make it many times worse than before as it would smear even more into your pores.

Whether you choose milk or just plain water you need to just keep flushing your eyes and skin until the effects are diminished. This may take anywhere from just a few minutes to quite a few as this will all depend on the quality and volume of pepper spray.

The hardest part will be keeping your eyes open enough to get the water or milk in there to flush out the pepper spray and it make take a few minutes of flushing before you can open them up even halfway. I have found that tilting your head to the side and pouring at an angle across the eyes starting in the corners to be the most effective until the eyes can be opened further.

Once the eyes can be opened at least halfway you can then take a milk carton or bottle of water and hold it over one eye as you attempt to open the eye allowing the liquid to permeate the entire eye cavity.

If you have been sprayed in the eyes with the pepper gel or pepper foam models you will have a bit harder time removing it from the eyes and skin as it sticks and smears. As with the regular sprays you need to just keep flushing and under no circumstances should you rub.

Which Works Better – Stun Guns Or Pepper Spray?

Friday, May 6th, 2011

Many people wonder which one is better for defending yourself, a stun gun or pepper spray and there is no short answer to the question. The effects and usage of the two are so different that comparing them becomes complicated.

Stun guns are designed to inflict pain in order to deter an attacker and cause him to head the other way. Although the pain level can vary according to what voltage you are using, it hurts either way. Unlike you see on television zapping someone with a stun gun for a second does not cause them to fall unconscious or flop around on the ground like a fish.

This is mostly due to the fact that you need to hold a stun gun against your attacker’s body in order for the stun to be delivered and when zapped your natural instinct is to pull away from the stun gun. In order to render someone unconscious with a stun gun you would probably have to hold it against their body for more than 10 seconds.

With that said I am sure you can see that a stun gun is not a projectile weapon and your attacker would have to be close enough to grab you in order for you to use your stun gun and this can be extremely dangerous.

A pepper spray on the other hand is a projectile weapon that can generally shoot its spray from 6-25 feet away depending on the size and model of your pepper spray.

Not only can you use it long before your attacker can get to you it lasts for up to 45 minutes unlike the stun gun whose effect ends as soon as the stun gun is removed from contact with the attacker’s body.

This means that a pepper spray can buy you quite some time to escape your attacker and make it to safety as he will not be able to see or breathe clearly for more than 30 minutes.

As you can see the two items are like apples and oranges. Pepper spray is meant for an attacker that is at a distance because if they are in too close you may get blow-back from the spray which can cause you to also not be able to see to escape.

A stun gun is meant for an attacker that is in close and within arm’s reach of you. So to answer the original question as to which works better it all depends on the situation. You can find stun guns in all sizes and voltages so it should be easy for you to find one that you would like to carry with you. A mini stun gun can be a good choice if you need something small.

Both items are rather inexpensive and to be honest you would be the safest if you have one of each with you at all times. If you see the attacker coming, you pepper spray him. If you don’t see him coming and he grabs you then you stun gun him to make him let go and then you pepper spray him.

Outdoor Activity Safety Tips for Women

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

As the warmer weather approaches more women will find themselves able to enjoy the outdoors and all of the activities associated with warm weather fun. But with this additional outdoor activity we will also see an increase in attacks on women.

By following a few simple tips and using your common sense, you can drastically lower your odds of falling victim to attack.

• Never wear your earphones in both ears. It makes it far too easy for some criminal to sneak up and attack you before you know it. Criminals love people who make easy victims and not being able to hear them coming up from behind would make you a much easier target.
• Carry some type of self defense weapon. It could give you the edge you need to get away from or outright repel an attacker. You could use a device like the Mace Hot Walkers. They are 1 pound walking weights that contain a hidden pepper spray. Not only will they help you get a better workout, they provide you that extra edge should the need arise.
• There really is safety in numbers. It is not a guarantee but it sure does not hurt. So if at all possible, try to find a workout partner that enjoys the same type of outside activities that you do.
• Stay aware of your surroundings. Your goal should always be to look like a bad victim. You want the criminal to simply move on to an easier target. You can do this by being aware of anyone near you and what is going on around you at all times.
• Avoid being out during dusk or dawn hours. Many criminals prefer the cover of darkness to hunt for victims and this includes the dusk and dawn hours where light is fading quickly.
• Make sure someone knows exactly where you are going and when you plan on returning just in case something happens to you while you are out enjoying your day.

As you can plainly see, there is nothing on this list that is expensive or overly complicated to accomplish. With that said you have to decide what your safety is worth to you and then act accordingly.

How to use the Mace Pepper Spray Gun

Friday, August 20th, 2010

In the past, most of the options for a pepper spray delivery system were limited to just canisters. As time progressed you could find it hidden in benign appearing items like lipsticks, batons and pens as well.

Thanks to the fine folks over at Mace, we have yet another option in the form of the Mace Pepper Gun. This handy little device has quite a few features that are not available with the other delivery methods.

The Mace Pepper Gun uses their patented Bag-in-a-Can Technology. This allows the device to maintain a constant stream even when turned on the side or upside down! Not only that, it shoots up to twenty five feet away which is about twice what the other delivery methods will do.

As for ease of use, it does not get much easier to operate than the Mace Pepper Gun. Once loaded with a pepper canister, you simply aim and shoot. To simplify the process they even included a LED light for the weapon.

This LED light affords three main benefits:
1. Wherever you shine the light is where the pepper spray will land. This makes aiming for the face very simple. Shine the light directly in their eyes and blast away and continue to do so until he is screaming out in agony from the burn!
2. The other added benefit of the LED light is that when you do shine the light it his eyes it will help to disorient him for the second or so it will take the pepper spray from the Mace Pepper Gun to make him wish he was elsewhere. After it starts to kick in the fight is over and he will not be able to see you so you can escape to safety.
3. The fear factor. At night when you pull this out it will be tough to tell exactly what you have in your hand and could potentially scare off the attacker or at least distract him long enough for you to take a deep breath and use the device.

So I am sure you can see that there is not much to absorb when it comes to learning how to use the Mace Pepper Gun. You load it, point the light and squeeze the trigger. That really is all there is to it!

One more benefit that Mace provided with their Pepper Gun is that they sell practice canisters. They are filled with water and allow you the chance to test out the device without wasting your precious pepper spray.

How to learn martial arts from home

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

One of the best things you can do for your body, mind and soul is to learn martial arts. You can lose tons of weight, become more limber than ever before as well as increase your self esteem and take control over your life. Unfortunately, if you live in an area without training facilities or simply cannot afford to pay it can make it hard to get yourself trained and enjoy the life enhancing benefits of martial arts.

The good is news is that you can learn martial arts from home which allows you to include your family and friends. You will find that it is a great way for you to spend some quality time with your loved ones as well as allow them to enjoy the health benefits.

So how do you do it? It is easy if you are rich and famous or at least rich because you can simply pay for a Sensei to come out to your home and train you one on one. Now for the rest of us we have to go a different route.

The most cost effective way to learn martial arts at home is by the use of instructional videos. There are many great videos you can choose from covering various martial arts disciplines and hand to hand combat styles. This allows you to pick what you think will suit you and your family the best.

So if your interest in learning martial arts from home is strictly for defense and not actually embracing the lifestyle you may want to choose a training video that just teaches you defense. In fact there are a few that have only a few moves total but those few moves are devastating to your opponent.

Just remember that all of the moves taught in these videos are for self defense purposes only and should not be used to initiate a fight. The moves taught are meant to cause bodily harm to your opponent and you better have a good reason why you went to this level.

Of course, defending yourself or someone else can qualify as a good reason. To steal a line from the Spiderman movies “with great power comes great responsibility” so be sure to use common sense and good judgment when unleashing your new found skills.

How to record your phone conversations

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

With the release of the alleged Mel Gibson rant tapes it has left many people wondering just how someone could record a phone conversation without the other person knowing about it. To be honest, that is very easy with all of the new technology out there. You can buy Digital Phone Recorders that can plug right into your phone or some that can act as your home phone while being ready to record should the need arise.

The more popular of the two main types of Phone Recorders would be the small Digital Recorders. They simply plug right into the headphone jack of your home or even cell phones and then you hit the record button and it will record until you stop it or it runs out of space.

They also can be used to record sound from within a room either using the built-in or an external microphone and some of the better models even have a voice activated feature so it will only record when it “hears” voices.

The less popular type of Phone Recorder can only record phone conversation that come through itself which means that you could not use it to record your cell phone or even a phone from another room. They also do not generally have the ability to record sounds from within a room either which would account for the lack of popularity.

So as you can see recording a phone conversation is quite easy these days and the person on the other line would never know unless you tell them but that is another issue you must consider.

You see many states have what they call a “two party consent” law which requires both parties be aware that they are being recorded. You need to know what the law is for your state should you decide to start recording phone conversations so you do not wind up getting yourself into hot water with the law enforcement community of your area.

To see whether your state has a “two party consent” law or not you can look here at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_recording_laws.

If you live in a “two party” consent state then you may want to reconsider the use of a phone recorder or at the very least consult an attorney to know exactly what you can do without breaking the laws of your state.

How to use a Hidden Camera Detector

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

The need to worry about hidden cameras has increased over the years because the technology is now so readily available and widely used. You can buy a camera hidden in just about anything these days, from books to watches and everything in between. They are getting more difficult to recognize even up close and this is where a good Hidden Camera Detector can make all the difference.

Hidden Camera Detector technology has improved over time just like cameras so you can easily protect yourself from having your privacy invaded. This should be something you think about whenever you use a public restroom, changing or locker room since a video of that event could wind up on the internet being viewed by thousands of perverts for years to come.

Hidden cameras can be wired, wireless or even self recording. This means that whichever Hidden Camera Detector you choose needs to be able to detect all three if you want maximum protection.

Wireless cameras are the easiest to detect because of their RF or Radio Frequency. This is a signal that the wireless camera gives off the entire time it is powered on. Your Hidden Camera Detector should easily alert you to the presence of the RF signals and then you just need to either leave or if you want proof, narrow down the location. This can be done by the use of the signal strength meter on your Hidden Camera Detector. The closer you get to the source, the stronger the signal.

Wired and self recording hidden cameras do not give off RF signals like the wireless cameras so they are a bit tougher to locate. This is where the eyepiece of your Hidden Camera Detector comes into play.

You simply look through the specially made eyepiece and any video camera lenses within a few feet will flash red so you will know exactly where they are located. At that point you can contact the authorities and put a stop to their bad behavior.

Out of the 3 types of hidden cameras, the wired and self recording models are most likely the types of camera you will run into in public settings. Wireless cameras are best suited for situations where you are not able to run a wire and are usually used in private homes.

This is the reason you would be best served by purchasing a Hidden Camera Detector that can handle all 3 types of cameras so you are ensured the maximum protection when out in public.

Self Defense Method of MMA

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Training yourself to become a better fighter doesn’t necessarily mean that every weekend you are encouraged to frequent sports pubs and engage in physical altercations. In fact, becoming involved with close combat training can effectively enhance your ability to defend yourself in those unexpected situations.

I think we all understand which situations I’m speaking; the one where you’re simply minding your own business on a street corner when somebody approaches you with demeaning words and unwarranted anger – this is where learning how to defend yourself physically can come in quite handy, because it’s almost certain that this person advanced with the intention to fight.

In short, MMA or mixed martial arts is defined as a full contact combat sport, and it permits a large variety of fighting methods, including those of tradition and non-tradition. This means that grappling, as well as striking, is allowed. Most fights actually end in a grapple, followed by a submission move (i.e. arm bar). Congruently, this is why learning mixed martial arts for self defense is so beneficial. It’s true that most physical altercations, whether they are during after hours at a town bar or in the parking lot outside of a gym, almost always end up on the ground in a furious jostle for position.

But if you truly want to subdue your attacker, you must learn the various styles and techniques of handling your opponent while you’re both on the ground. A take-down is typically followed by the most common hybrid of “ground and pound,” where you have your foe on his back while sitting on top of him throwing devastating punches. But MMA ground fighting isn’t always defined by clinching mixed with knees, elbows and punches to the face. In fact, it’s what’s known as “submission grappling” that gives note to a well rounded MMA fighter.

When I say submission grappling, I mean putting your adversary in a choke-hold and/or any of the following:
• Joint locks
• Arm-locks
• Leg-locks
• Clinch holds
• Compression locks
• Pain compliance
• Pinning

There are a few intricate others, including the “Grapevine”, but these are the top categories that define submission holds. These are a part of many different disciplines including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Catch Wrestling, Judo, Sambo, Shootwrestling, Pankration and more.

Let’s not forget one of the most important elements and differentiators to boxing; kickboxing/Muay Thai. Certain MMA fighters specialize in areas like kickboxing provided they’re strongest in that area. The same goes for clinching and ground and pound – fighters will determine their strong areas during practice and routine, effectively mastering their most powerful kick and/or submission move. This is evident while viewing any MMA fight. You’ll notice that some MMA fighters almost always strike at the hips, venturing into a takedown and eventually ending the fight in submission while others enjoy staying on their feet and throwing lots of punches.

Nevertheless, all of these traditional styles and disciplines mixed with a combination of modern or non-tradition styles envelope what we commonly refer to as Mixed Martial Arts today. The sport is growing in popularity. Congruently, more people are taking an interest into learning some of these self defense techniques. Not only does engaging in such activity come with the ability to defend, but it naturally enhances fitness.
