I don’t know about you but I have never been anti gun. I do believe in the right to bear arms but I also believe we need restrictions in place to at least attempt to keep the guns out of the hands of nuts. What’s got me on this subject?
A news story about a shooting at a Mass. gun show this past weekend. The victim and the shooter were a 8 year old little boy who died that day.
This was one of those shows where people come from all over to shoot and buy all types of guns including automatic weapons. You know, ones that spray tons of bullets in a matter of seconds with one press of the trigger.
Charles Bizilj, director of emergency medicine at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Stafford, Conn. attended the Machine Gun Shoot and Firearms Expo at the Westfield Sportsman’s Club with his 2 sons this weekend.
While they were there Mr. Bizilj thought it would be a good idea to let his 8 year old son shoot an Uzi 9mm sub machine gun. He said he did it cause “it was small and had no recoil”.
What he didn’t realize, was that the Uzi may not have a kick for an adult but it can for a child or especially, the unsuspecting. When fired this gun releases quick a bit of energy really fast. If you aren’t ready it can catch your off guard and bad things can happen.
In this case the kid had the gun and while the father turned to get his camera the child fired. The gun kicked up and still firing bullets, hit the child in the head killing him. I would imagine it all happened so fast that the boy never even knew what happened.
What really chaps my hide here is not only the father allowing the child to hold the gun while he grabbed a camera but also the fact that there was a supposedly licensed instructor right there with the kid.
I say supposedly cause they are still investigating and I haven’t seen what they found yet. Either way licensed or not, it doesn’t seem like they did their job correctly or this 8 year old child would still be alive.
People think these things are toys. Things to line up for like an amusement ride. But these things are nothing but tools of war and meant to dump a bunch of bullets at your enemy in split seconds. When I say a lot I mean 600-1700 bullets (rounds) per minute. Think about that. Thank God the clips only hold 32 rounds, usually, though there are modified clips around.
These things can do mass damage which is all they were designed for. No automatic weapons should be open to the civilian population, period, screw the I have the right to bear arms crap when it comes to this.
There is no reason for anyone who isn’t planning to kill MANY people to own an automatic weapon. Throwing 32 rounds at any animal in a matter of a few seconds is not hunting nor sport so there goes that excuse. For self defense, if you can’t hit your target with a single bullet you need to spend more time at the pistol range or invest in some non lethal self defense weapons.
This poor boy’s father should have his head examined for ever even considering letting his 8 year old fire an Uzi let alone actually doing it. I also can’t imagaine all of the people standing around watching this tiny child get in place to fire this weapon of war and this included the idiot instructor that was there.
This kid needed someone to be the adult and have common sense but that didn’t occur and he payed the ultimate price for it. Sad. Maybe we will wise up one day, but I doubt it.
