Sexual Assaults / Sexual Abuse / Sexual Violence
The sad truth about sexual assault.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice 2007 National Crime Victimization Survey sexual assaults have declined but even with that said someone falls victims to sexual assault every 2 minutes in this country which is more than appalling in this day and age. These numbers may be way off as well since there is no way to determine exactly how many sexual assaults occur but go unreported. They believe it to be a whopping 60%!
Did you know?
Most rapes are committed by someone the victim knows be it a family member or more often, a family friend or someone else very familiar to them. The people these poor victims are supposed to rely upon are the ones that are preying on them.
More than 50% sexual assaults take place within one mile or inside of the victims home according to the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Statistics-1997 Sex Offenses and Offenders Study. Considering most sexual assaults are committed by someone they know it doesn’t surprise that it happens where people feel the most safe, in your own home or neighborhood.
A surprising statistic is that one third of sexual assaults occur during daylight hours from 6am – 6pm which really shows that daylight does not guarantee your safety by any stretch of the imagination.
